Tina Lewis – Floyd L. Knight Children’s Center

Our latest Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is Tina Lewis, from Floyd L. Knight Children’s Center.  The new school year marks Mrs. Lewis’ 15th on staff as a Floyd L. Knight Falcon. Mrs. Lewis teaches high school-aged students. She has a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is credentialed in Special Education – General & Adapted Curriculum and was recently recognized as the 2019-20 Floyd L. Knight Children’s Center Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Lewis loves the opportunity to teach her students, even in the recent remote environment. She notes, “In my time at FLK, I have worked with many caring, knowledgeable, and innovative teachers and assistants and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow with them in the coming year. Our students brighten my days and constantly challenge me to be creative in my teaching. My two talented assistants and I have great plans for working with our students on both academic and functional skills. Together we plan on teaching our students to do their very best while having lots of fun in the process!”

In terms of teaching philosophy, Mrs. Lewis has a very powerful and positive approach, commenting, “Like Carol Dweck, author of The Growth Mindset, I believe in the power of ‘yet’. My students have limitations that make acquiring new academic and functional skills challenging. I often remind myself and them that it isn’t that they can’t do something; it’s only that they can’t do it ‘yet’.

Her colleagues and parents admire Mrs. Lewis as a hard-worker and student advocate.  In the words of one appreciative parent, “Mrs. Lewis has stepped up to guide us through remote learning. She has worked tirelessly to make it all work. We truly appreciate all her hard work.”
