Save Money. Stay Healthy.

As we enjoy the fruits (and veggies) of the summer growing season, it seems like a good time to talk about effective ways to save money and stay healthy. It all starts with fresh produce. In-season vegetables and fruits offer the ideal combination of nutrition and affordability.  Purchase as much produce as your family is likely to consume in a week’s time, and you will be able to enjoy delicious food at a manageable cost.

When your favorite fruits and vegetables are out-of-season, get in the habit of purchasing large portions of frozen items and keeping them in the freezer, in properly portioned containers. Effective freezing strategies can also work well with skinless poultry and fish products. You can usually find these items in bulk sizes, which have a lower per unit cost as well.

When it comes to beef, give consideration to buying more chuck or bottom round roast than sirloin.  This cut of meat has a lower fat content and is more affordable. Fat content in dairy products can have an economical impact as well. Purchase yogurt and low fat milk in large-sized containers. These products last longer and save you money in the process.

Finally, here are a few tips involving grain products. Whole grain products such as oatmeal and brown ride is healthier than their instant counterparts and less expensive. When grocery shopping, also be on the look out for day-old wheat bread.  When it’s just past it’s recommended “purchase by” date, it’s still healthy and tasty, and discounted as well.
