April is nationally recognized as Donate Life Month, and our Wellness column is concluding our 3 part series on the importance and the essentials of organ donation. If you have decided to seriously consider becoming an organ donor, the DonateLifeNC website has plenty of information to help you make the best decision for you. If you decide to become an organ donor, you can sign up right at the website.
Another website that is filled with detailed materials about the entire organ donation process, is OrganDonor.gov. Today we thought we’d share a few more facts and figures from this website that clearly demonstrate the need for organ donors.
- 95% of Americans support organ donation, but only 54% of the adult population has signed up
- Every 10 minutes another person is added to the waiting list. Every day, 20 people pass away while waiting for a transplant.
- Every year, the number of people added to the waiting list outpaces the number that sign up to donate, and the number who receive organ donations. From 1990 to 2015 (a 25 year period) the waiting list grew from approximately 23,000 people to nearly 120,000.
- Finally, while successful organ donors can donate up to 8 lifesaving organs, only 3 people in 1,000 pass away in a manner that allows them to donate their organs — even if they agreed to.
