Our Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is B.T. Bullock Elementary School’s music teacher Myra Thomas Cole. Mrs. Cole is in her tenth year (out of 20!) of teaching at Bullock, but has been a teacher long before that. She taught in Harnett and Guilford counties before Lee and was also a director/teacher of Kindermusik of Sanford for 16 years. Mrs. Cole has taught music for five years, kindergarten for 11 years and second grade for five years. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Appalachian State University and a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
To say that Mrs. Cole is an active school team player would be an understatement. In addition to teaching, she is a member of the school’s School Improvement Team and Lighthouse Team, chair of the Traditions Team for multiple years, directed the school’s Fall Festival twice, is a mentor to beginning teachers and also has an after-school chorus club once a week that sings at community and school events.
Mrs. Cole has several teaching accomplishments that she’s very proud of, such as forming lifetime relationships with her students and getting them excited about and interested in learning about music. She was honored as the B.T. Bullock Teacher of the Year in 2013-14; Colfax Primary (in Greensboro) Teacher of the Year, and was the recipient of the NC Jaycees District and State Young Educator of the Year Awards in 1991.
In her free time, Mrs. Cole loves spending time with her family, playing the piano, serving as the church pianist at Cool Springs Baptist Church, painting, photography and spending time in the mountains and at her happy place, Topsail Island.
