Michele Cox – Broadway Elementary

Our Welcome To Sanford Lee County Teacher of the Week is Michele Cox of Broadway Elementary School. Ms. Cox is a Literacy Specialist at Broadway, where she has spent 19 years of her 24-year teaching career. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Campbell University and a Master of Education in Reading Education.

Ms. Cox’s goal is to help her students to become successful readers while also instilling in them a love of reading. “I want my students to enjoy reading and become life-long readers. I also have high expectations for my students. There is nothing like seeing a student accomplish a goal that at first they could not reach.”

There are a few teaching accomplishments that Ms. Cox is proudest of, including being able to teach at Broadway, where she attended elementary school as a child. Ms. Cox received the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award in 1994, her first year of teaching; and is also proud of being nominated by her peers to be the Broadway Elementary Teacher of the Year for the 2000-2001 school year.

Ms. Cox believes that her colleagues would describe her as organized and always willing to help. “I do pride myself on being organized. Also, I feel like Broadway is ‘my school’ and I try to help in any way possible to make our school more successful. The staff at Broadway feels like a family and we work together well.”

In her free time, Ms. Cox enjoy spending time with her family – her son, Hunter, attends graduate school at Appalachian State University; her son, Jordan, attends Central Carolina Community College; and her daughter, Rachel, is a student at East Lee Middle School. As a family, they like to watch movies and go on trips together.
