Major Tourism Development Initiative Draws Closer For Region

The much-anticipated, now impending, Sanford Tourism Development Authority is drawing closer, with approved amendments by Sanford City Council and Lee County Commissioners taking place within the past few weeks. Endorsements by both governing bodies, formally recognize the 3 percent levy on rental lodging that was passed into law by North Carolina’s General Assembly this session, and affirms the structure for how the funds will be collected and allocated.

In addition to securing additional funds for the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, a majority of proceeds that are generated by the occupancy tax will be earmarked for the new Authority, which will be used to promote Sanford and Lee County as an appealing tourism destination. The next step in the process is a public hearing on September 5, at which time citizen comment and authority bylaws will be discussed.  Pending approval of the bylaws, authority members will be appointed to carry out the implementation of the program.
