This week Welcome To Sanford is pleased to recognize Joy Velasco of B.T. Bullock Elementary School as our Teacher of the Week. Ms. Velasco is in her tenth year at B.T. Bullock, where she is an enthusiastic first grade teacher. Ms. Velasco has also taught 4th grade, 5th grade and kindergarten over the years at B.T. Bullock. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from St. Joseph’s College in New York and a Masters in Education from Long Island University.
Ms. Velasco is very involved in activities at the school, where she serves as a Grade Level Facilitator, Mentor and Lighthouse Team member. Peers recognize Ms. Velasco as a dedicated, determined and hard-working colleague and she sums up her teaching philosophy by noting, “I do my best to give each child exactly what they need to be successful in my classroom and hopefully show them how that carries over into the rest of their lives. While I ensure that all academic requirements are met, I also offer as many opportunities as possible to grow and encourage their spirits as well.”
Ms. Velasco experienced a true teacher’s highlight recently, when a former student of hers, now a recent high school graduate, dropped by to update her on his school accomplishments. He had evolved from a shy student, to an individual filled with confidence, and much of the evolution occurred during his year in Ms. Velasco’s class. It was gratifying to realize the role she had played in this young student’s progress.
When she isn’t engaged in her school activities, Ms. Velasco enjoys family time with her husband and 2 children, including occasional visits to Disney World.
