Grocery Chains Hunger For Market Share In Sanford

Two international grocery store chains are in the midst of adding Sanford and Lee County to their US and North Carolina footprints.

German-based grocery company Lidl is in staffing mode for its new location at the intersection of US 421 and NC 87, in the southeast quadrant of the city, which is scheduled to open in summer 2017. Supervisors are in the midst of training and the company is working its way through over 400 applicants for a variety of store positions.  According to Lidl executives, their new store will offer customers a product selection that extends beyond traditional food fare, with clothing, tools and provisions available for purchase.

German-based grocery company Aldi – often viewed as a primary rival to Lidl throughout Europe, is also on the verge of establishing a Sanford location.  Aldi has been granted a construction permit for a store location on South Horner Boulevard.  The Aldi store, which has no announced projected opening date is likely to be smaller than its German rival and more focused on grocery staples and an emphasis on in-house brands.

With their impending arrivals, Lidl and Aldi will join Salisbury NC-based Food Lion, Lowes Foods, Piggly Wiggly and Wal-Mart among notable grocery options in Lee County.
