Sanford - Lee County Government Information

Sanford is the county seat of Lee County and operates under a council-manager government. The city council consists of the mayor and seven council members, each with a four-year term. Five of the council seats are geographically based in wards (or districts). Two seats are citywide representatives elected at-large.  Sanford’s Mayor is T. Chet Mann, a native of Sanford. Mayor Mann’s term began in 2013.

Sanford’s city government is directed by the City Manager, who is currently Hal Hegwer. The city government includes departments for Legal, Administration, Clerk, Information Systems, Finance, Budget, Community Development, Emergency Services, Fire, Police, Human Resources, Golf, Inspections, Public Works, Revenue, Sewer Plant, and Water Plant.

Established in 1907 from portions of Moore and Chatham Counties, Lee County, named for CSA hero, Robert E. Lee, is North Carolina’s 98th county. Oversight of Lee County is based with 7 commissioners who are elected in staggered terms during even numbered years.  Amy Dalrymple currently serves as the Chair of the Lee County Commissioners.

The City of Sanford, Lee County and Town of Broadway all have very detailed and robust websites, which offer a great deal of information about local government and the community services they provide. The Resources section of the Welcome To Sanford website also offers a great deal of information.
