Gaston Collins – Southern Lee High School

Our Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is Gaston Collins of Southern Lee High School. Mr. Collins, or Coach Collins to many, has been a part of the Cavalier family for 13 years of his 21-year teaching career. He’s an Advanced Physical Education Teacher for grades 10-12 and is also the Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. He has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from Elizabeth City State University.

Mr. Collins believes that all children can learn. “They are unique, and have different learning styles. As an educator, it is my responsibility to determine ways of creating an educational environment where students can meet their full potential.”

When asked what his proudest teaching accomplishment is, Mr. Collins says it is when former students come back to show their appreciation. “My proudest accomplishment is when my students graduate, come back to visit and share their successes with me. To hear students say ‘thank you’ for the impact I might have made in their lives makes me proud.”

Mr. Collins would like to think his colleagues describe him as “firm,” “fair,” “loyal,” “passionate,” “consistent,” “kind,” “caring” and “funny.”  In truth, Mr. Collins just loves his students. He comments, “I feel extremely blessed to serve the students of Lee County. If I am able to make a difference in the life of just one person, then my living will not be in vain.”
