Over the past few weeks, our Family First column has focused on enjoyable summertime family activities you can experience right here in the heart of Lee County. This week, let’s consider the Sanford Municipal Golf Course. Our community course was devised by legendary golf course designer Donald Ross way back in 1934 and is now in it’s ninth decade of service. The course really has it all … challenging holes, beautiful surroundings, fairway-lined pine trees, azaleas and scenic views of Buffalo Creek.
Whether you and other your family members are serious about improving your game, or are just looking forward to a relaxing day outdoors, the Sanford Municipal Golf Course is a great choice. There are all sorts of special activities for you to be a part of, including “Bring Your Child To The Range Month” throughout July, as well leagues and tournaments for youth, men, ladies, seniors and parents & children. This year’s Youth Golf Camp takes place July 9-13, and allows over 60 campers between ages 9-and-14 to improve their golfing skills.
Amenities at the course include a chipping green, driving range, practice bunker, putting green, pro shop and snack bar, and lessons for all levels of players are available. Golf carts are available, and are required until 1pm on weekends and holidays. Tee times are recommended on weekdays and required on weekends and holidays. PGA Pro David Von Canon has worked at the course since 1994 and is now in his 20th year as Course Manager.
The Sanford Municipal Golf Course is easy to get to … just a “short drive” out of town to the north and east on Hawkins Avenue, near the US 1/501 Bypass intersection with US 421, on Golf Course Lane. Don’t “putter” around … find out more, and take advantage of this affordable, enjoyable golfing experience, by calling 919-777-1901, or by visiting the golf course section at the City of Sanford Website.
