Our Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is Emily Braren of SanLee Middle School. Ms. Braren is a first-year seventh-grade social studies teacher and is enjoying settling in to her role as a member of the Stallion family. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government and History from the College of William and Mary and is also the Yearbook Club and NHS advisor.
Ms. Braren’s teaching philosophy is to help kids question history. She comments “I want them to learn that history was written through a lot of unique perspectives, and to try to help them understand it in that light. I also hope that the unique perspectives of history in my class helps them realize that they are making history every day too!”
One of the proudest teaching accomplishments Ms. Braren has had so far is being able to discuss a difficult topic with her students, noting “After teaching my students about 9/11, we were able to have really intelligent discussions about the event, what it meant for America and how we could promote peace after tragedy.”
Ms. Braren likes to hike and rock climb, visit national parks, travel and read in her free time. She is also proud of the fact that she is a product of the Lee County Schools system. “I’m a graduate of Lee Early College (class of ’16, go Cobras!), and I’m so excited to be working at a middle school back in my home town!”
