This time our Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week recognition moves in a different direction, as we add our “thank you and congratulations” to Dr. Jim Atkinson, Lee County Schools Assistant Superintendent for Auxiliary Services. Dr. Atkinson, who has served our schools and students with distinction since 2003, will be retiring at the end of February (tomorrow!).
Dr. Atkinson is concluding a 40 year career in education. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, Dr. Atkinson served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal at schools in North Carolina and Florida, before being hired as an Assistant Superintendent here in Lee County Schools. As Dr. Atkinson looks back on his tenure at Lee County Schools, he comments, “As far as the people here, everyone is forward thinking, and trying to do things properly and in order. We use technology so much more than we used to. But the issues are the same – people are very concerned about their children, and that hasn’t changed.”
Lee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Andy Bryan knows better than most, about Dr. Atkinson’s contributions to our schools, and about the void he will leave behind. “Jim brings his best effort every day for what he does here in Lee County. And I know for a fact for what he has done throughout his education career – whether it has been coaching or teaching, as a principal or administrator – he has always done an outstanding job as an educator and as a professional. But I will also say, and I think anyone in the community who knows Jim would say, as great as an educator and administrator as he is, he is a thousand times an even better person.”
Congratulations and best wishes on your retirement Dr. Atkinson, and THANK YOU for your service to our children and our community.
