Deep River Shore Access Becomes A Lee County Priority

The natural scenic beauty of the Deep River is a Lee County treasure. Kayaking adventures and relaxing tubing travels are enjoyable past times, but for local residents they come with a measure of inconvenience. There are currently access points to the river, but only the Chatham County side of the river. Meanwhile, the Lee County side just has rocky areas to get to the river, making it potentially dangerous to get into the river. In recent months, the Sanford Area Growth Alliance (SAGA)/Chamber of Commerce has begun to gauge community interest support to secure state funding for paved public access and kayak ramps along the Deep River.

A recent Chamber survey of its members generated nearly 150 votes or comments, with 94% responsdents voting in favor of pursuing the measure. In response, the Chamber wrote a letter of support to Representative John Sauls to encourage his support of state funding for this project. Rep. Sauls has already provided verbal support of the project.
