Candace Matlock Land – Floyd L. Knight Center

Our Welcome To Sanford Lee County Teacher of the Week is Mrs. Candace Matlock Land of Floyd L. Knight/The Children’s Center, where she was recently recognized as the school’s Teacher of the Year for 2017-18. Mrs. Land has been teaching at FLK for two years, and has more than 15 years of total experience in Pre-K. She holds a Bachelor of Science in B-K teaching from Fayetteville State University and a Masters in Early Childhood Studies from Campbell University.

Mrs. Land’s teaching philosophy is simply “whatever it takes,” which isn’t always so easy to achieve. “Whatever it takes means that for each student and family I serve, I am committed to doing ‘whatever it takes’ to help them reach their individual goals. There is no cookie cutter way to teaching or reaching a child. We have to be passionate problem solvers.”

While she initially tried to run from teaching, Mrs. Land became a teacher because it was in her blood. “My grandmother who helped raise me is a retired teacher. My aunts, an uncle and even my grandfather, who was blind, taught at the Mississippi School for the Blind. The turning point for me was seeing my son, who had Developmental Delays, transform into a speaking, smart and funny boy after attending a quality Pre-K class. After that, I knew that I had to give back.”
