Our Welcome To Sanford Artist of the Week is a young local lady who is on the verge of receiving national recognition. Aryn Wright-Thompson, a 16-year old rising junior at Southern Lee High School, has a starring role in the new Kendrick Brothers inspirational film Overcomer, which opens to nationwide audiences this coming weekend.
Aryn’s featured role is Hannah Scott. After some reluctance, Hannah decides to try out for her school’s cross country team. There, she crosses paths with John Harrison, who has been tasked with coaching the team despite his misgivings to do so. His reluctance gets even greater when he discovers Hannah is the only runner to sign up. The movie is a heart-felt story that allows viewers to see these two individuals help each other overcome their challenges, and become each other’s biggest supporters.
Aryn is an honor-roll student and has danced at Dancers Workshop here in Sanford for many years, where tap is her favorite type of dance. Aryn also studies piano, ballet, jazz, acro, and lyrical dance. She’s participated in pageants across the state, including the Miss N.C.’s Little Miss program and the Black Miss North Carolina Organization. After 8 years’ worth of audition tapes, Aryn finally landed her first acting role, Overcomer, in spring 2018.
Aryn also recently had the privilege of playing a starring role here in Sanford, at a sneak preview showing of Overcomer at Spring Lane Cinemas on Friday, August 9. The house was packed and Aryn had a chance to walk the red carpet, answer questions from the audience and sign autographs. We have a few video clips below from Overcomer, as well as an Aryn interview conducted by her brother Ari, who also has a role in the film. The Aryn interview is compliments of Brick Capital Video and Terry McMillian.
