Artist of the Week – Karen Tatum

Our latest Welcome To Sanford Artist of the Week is popular local artist Karen Tatum.

Karen’s artistry is truly diverse and she feels at home with painting and drawing, as well as three-dimensional and related works.  Bold, strident use of colors and incorporation of all types of animals are commonplace in Karen’s work. Karen is a long-time active member of the Sanford Brush & Palette Club. She served as the organization’s president for 2 years in 2015-16 and is a mainstay in the organization’s committees and variety of activities in the community.

When asked to consider her artistic motivations, Karen comments “I want to share my passion for painting or drawing, or just creating something. I am in love with color, but I also love the way a monochromatic piece of art demands your other senses to pay attention and see deeper. I am a self taught artist and have been painting since 2003. My mother always told me I had this in me and my only regret is she never saw my art that she inspired.”

Karen also shares the observation that “You can try to figure out a painting, but you’ll be missing the point.” Accordingly, it’s no surprise that her works of art are often striking, diverse and demand a close inspection. This Steampunk Hat was created and inspired by a Kentucky Derby event, and received recognition in the Three Dimensional category at the 54th Annual Sanford Brush & Palette Art Show in 2018.

Karen’s Facebook page is filled with lots of examples of her work. You can also learn more about Karen Tatum ART by email.
