Andrew Lyerly – SanLee Middle School

Our Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is Andrew Lyerly of SanLee Middle School. Mr. Lyerly teaches Health Science Career Exploration and is the boys’ soccer head coach. He’s been a part of the Stallion family for the entirety of his three-year teaching career and holds a degree in Recreational Therapy from East Carolina University. Mr. Lyerly was a national and state certified recreational therapist for five years before becoming a teacher through lateral entry.

When asked what his proudest teaching accomplishments were, Mr. Lyerly said his Teacher of the Week nomination was up there on his list.  He comments, “I feel that being nominated by my principal has to be up there when it comes to teaching accomplishments. It feels great to know that Mrs. (Betsy) Bridges thinks this highly of me and would recommend me for this, especially for only having taught three years. I also feel that getting this teaching position was a big accomplishment for me. Being a lateral entry teacher and having a school take a chance on me to teach young minds means a lot.”

Over the summer, Lee County Schools Career and Technical Education Director Gary Hart informed Mr. Lyerly that he was actually the first Health Science Middle School teacher in the state, which he thinks “is pretty cool.”

And in his free time, Mr. Lyerly enjoys spending time with his family (his wife Sara and two sons, Cole and Beau), trying new foods and restaurants, collecting records, fly fishing and going to the beach. He is also a big sports fan
