Our Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is Amanda Zeh, a physical education teacher at Greenwood Elementary School, where she was recognized as the school’s Teacher of the Year for the 2016-17 school year. Ms. Zeh holds a B.S. in Physical Education from Lenoir-Rhyne University and has added Health and Reading Certifications to her teaching license. Now in her 11th year of teaching and 5th year as a member of the Hornet family, Ms. Zeh has had the honor of teaching over 2,000 students throughout her career. In addition to her daily teaching responsibilities, Ms. Zeh is also the Chairperson of the School Improvement Team at Greenwood.
A dedicated Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Ms. Zeh says her last name rhymes with “play,” and that’s an appropriate description of the enthusiasm she brings to her classes and the school as a whole. Her peers admire Ms. Zeh’s focus on student excellence and her creative ability to incorporate subjects like reading, writing, math and science into her phys ed classes.
During her career, Ms. Zeh has been instrumental in generating over $6,500 in grant funding in a variety of areas, including health-related technology, bowling materials to promote fraction knowledge, and new physical education equipment for students. She was chosen to participate in the NC Governor’s Teacher Network, where she wrote curriculum that is used throughout North Carolina. Ms. Zeh has also been recognized with the NC Department of Public Instruction/Subway School Health Champion Award, and has made numerous presentations to a variety of groups on topics ranging from healthful living and the role of literacy in physical education instruction, to the relationship between movement and the brain.
Ms. Zeh’s overriding goal is for her kids to enjoy exercise and to practice healthy habits.Her focus is on teaching children the effectiveness of movement and the importance of living healthier lives. As a P.E. teacher at Greenwood, Ms. Zeh has the opportunity to teach and interact with nearly every student in the school. It’s sometimes believed that Ms. Zeh actually knows every Greenwood student by name!
