The 20th Annual Southern Side by Side Championship & Exhibition will begin this Thursday, April 25 and go through Sunday, April 28 at Deep River Sporting Clays and Sporting Schools. This four day festival welcomes shooters, spectators, sponsors and businesses to celebrate traditional wingshooting and Southern outdoorsman history and tradition.
Several competitive events are taking place during the weekend. The Ripon Cup, the main event, and the Compak Sporting Competition, a black-powder shooting event, will both take place on Sunday. The Parker Brothers-L.C. Smith Challenge Cup will take place on Saturday. All shooting events are friendly, polite, and even Elizabethan-era in dress and accoutrement from some. Rookies and novices will have opportunities to shoot or try something new.
In addition to the championships, Deep River will be a huge mall of exhibition tents for the four days of the event. These tents will contains items to be sold and museum-like display of American, British, and Continental gunmakers, clothing, accessories, engravings, art and literature, and other items of sports, culture, and history.
The classic’s annual Pig Pickin’ Banquet will take place Saturday afternoon. The banquet will include bluegrass music by Alice Zicone and the awards ceremony for the day’s activities.
Admission is free each day. Events are scheduled for 12-3pm Thursday, 9am-5pm Friday and Saturday, and 8am-5pm Sunday. Deep River Sporting Clays and Shooting School is located at 284 Cletus Hall Rd in northern Lee County.
