This week’s Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is Ashley Matsik, from Deep River Elementary School. Now in her fifth year as a fifth grade teacher in Lee County Schools, Mrs. Matsik was also recently recognized system wide as Lee County Schools’ Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Matsik has a BS in Elementary Education and K-12 Licensure in Reading, as well as a Masters in Elementary Education, with an Academically & Intellectually Gifted Licensure from East Carolina University.
Mrs. Matsik is a Sanford native and a product of Lee County Schools herself. Both of her parents are involved in education here in Lee County. Among Mrs. Matsik’s noteworthy accomplishments has been her active involvement in Project Lift-Off, Lee County Schools’ nationally recognized summer program for at-risk students.
Enthusiastic, energetic, creative and knowledgeable are all terms that have been used to describe Mrs. Matsik. She loves to challenge and to engage her students by bringing learning opportunities into “real world” situations. That could mean transporting her students into a Revolutionary-period museum of history, a fantasy rainforest, or recasting her classroom as a hospital emergency room. Mrs. Matsik is unabashedly in love with her students and works tirelessly to help them to become aware of the possibilities that are present in the world before them. She comments, ” It is a privilege to help shape the students’ futures by challenging them to reach their full potential.”
Deep River Elementary Principal Amy Lundy observes, “If you have ever been in her presence you would know she has a love for three things: her faith, her family, and her students. Ashley believes her mission daily is to love people. And that is exactly what she does every time she steps foot on our campus. Ashley Matsik is one amazing teacher that we are proud to call a Deep River Gator!”
