Business of the Week Recap: The Stores Of Sanford

It has been 4 months since we began our Business of the Week column, and in that time we have highlighted a wide variety of businesses that make Sanford special. This week, we take a look back at the retail locations we have featured as part of the column.

In December, we looked at the history of Stanley’s Home Center, a store which has been a Sanford staple for 44 years. Originally part of Western Auto, founder Burton Stanley and his wife Dorothy took on the new name after Sears acquired the chain. Burton was honored by the Lee County Chamber of Commerce as the small Business Person of the Year when he retired in 2015. Now, his daughter Karen Stanley runs Stanley Home Center. She also recently opened up “Sense & Scentsibility,” a boutique selling fragrances, bath products, and more!

In January, we covered Added Accents and The Purple Poodle Co., two unique boutiques which sell clothing, home goods, bath products, jewellery, gifts, and more! Added Accents has been in Sanford since 1997, and owner Ashley Whitaker has experienced a notable increase in foot traffic since she joined the business in 2017. The Purple Poodle Co. is a brand new business, opening in Downtown Sanford in November of last year after seeing success as an online business in the beginning of 2019. Both stores reflect Sanford’s unique personality, and offer products you wouldn’t find anywhere else! View our video about the Purple Poodle Co. below to learn their story!

Finally, in February we featured The Chocolate Cellar, another recent addition to downtown Sanford. The Chocolate Cellar offers a broad selection signature truffles with flavors ranging from Bacon Bonbon to Cappuccino. It doesn’t need to be February to enjoy some chocolate! Owners and Sanford natives Laura Phelps and her daughter Carol hold wine pairing events on the first Saturday of every month, take a look at their Facebook page to learn about new flavors and upcoming events.

Next week we’ll continue our recap, taking a look at the non-profits of Sanford. If you are interested in having your Sanford business featured on Welcome to Sanford, contact us at info@welcometosanford.com or message us on Facebook.
