Nicole Woodruff – Greenwood Elementary

Our Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is Nicole Woodruff of Greenwood Elementary. Mrs. Woodruff is a fifth-grade teacher and has been a Hornet for three of her eight-year teaching career. She is a member of the school’s Sunshine Committee and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Mrs. Woodruff’s teaching philosophy stems from her own children. She comments,“When I look at my students, I see my two daughters. I feel the joy of being overwhelmingly proud of them in their successes, and the strong sting when they struggle. I am pushing to be the teacher that I want for my children.”

The teaching accomplishment that gives Mrs. Woodruff her greatest sense of pride is simply the little things that happen every day in the classroom. She exclaims, “I live for the little special moments. When a student tells me they love me, when they meet a goal they’ve been striving for or when one of them comes to me when they need a hug or someone to listen. I keep a ‘Happy Heart’ folder each year, and I love going through them when I need a reminder to focus on the good.”

Her colleagues describe Mrs. Woodruff as a teacher who is a “reliable teammate who remains teachable and reflective” and is a “good listener while staying positive.”  Mrs. Woodruff believes that teaching also makes her a better person.  She observes, “Every day challenges me to be the best version of myself that I can be. Most days it feels like there are obstacles all around, but I just try to focus on doing the next right thing for my students.”

Mrs. Woodruff enjoys uninterrupted activities with her family in her free time, noting “There are so many distractions in today’s world so I try to make that time special. I also enjoy solo trips to Target!”
