The Temple Theatre, Sanford’s legendary live performing arts venue, has unveiled its lineup for the upcoming 2019-20 season and it’s filled with the usual combination of Broadway hits, returning Temple favorites and new, innovative performances. The highlight of the schedule is likely to be the final big production of the season. It’s Mama Mia! the engaging musical that’s based on the catalog of upbeat, pop hits from Sweden’s Seventies Superstars, ABBA.
But the entire year has plenty of entertainment to offer season ticket holders and first-time visitors. The first major event is the timeless musical classic Oliver! taking place September 12-29. This musical “twist” of the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist has won Tonys, Oliviers and even an Academy Award for Best Picture.
The two remaining shows in 2019 both provide a balance of old and new. Stardust Road: A Hoagy Charmichael Musical Journey is a new production, based on Charmichael’s timeless musical standards and takes place October 17 through November 3. The Temple is one of the first theaters in the country to present this show. Up next, is a new production by a group of old Temple standbys. The Church Basement Ladies are back to entertain local residents, this time with a Christmas-themed comedy called Away In A Basement, December 5-22.
2020 begins at the Temple with an innovative show called The Last Five Years, about 2 twenty-something New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the span of 5 years. Then popular singer Jason Petty returns to the Temple stage with an engaging singalong show called Every Song Tells A Story. It’s a collection of several popular songs from the past several decades, along with the compelling backstories of each tune.
The two final shows of the 2019-20 season are sure to generate lots of anticipation. In addition to Mama Mia! the Temple Theatre will be presenting the quintessential Southern dramedy Steel Magnolias, March 12-29.
