Our Welcome To Sanford Teacher of the Week is Sarah Weekly of Floyd L. Knight/The Children’s Center. Ms. Weekly has been a part of the Falcon family for the entirety of her six-year teaching career. She is an elementary exceptional children’s teacher, focusing on grades 2-5 this year and teaching all subject areas. Ms. Weekly also represents FLK on the Lee County Schools Curriculum and Instruction Committee, has organized fundraisers for the school and is currently helping to reorganize the FLK’s PTSO.
Ms. Weekly holds both a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master of Education as an Intervention Specialist (moderate to intensive needs) from Kent State University in Ohio. Her licensure areas are Exceptional Children: Adaptive Curriculum (K-12) and Exceptional Children: General Curriculum (K-12).
Ms. Weekly’s teaching philosophy is grounded in her belief that every child has the potential to learn, commenting “As educators, it is our job to unlock it. It is important to set high expectations because it is better to strive for something and fall short, than to have never thought it possible.”
When it comes to reflecting on greatest teaching accomplishments, Ms. Weekly recognizes that every day is different and full of mini victories and defeats. She notes, ” I would say as an educator and person, I am proud that I have found a school that feels like family. Where we work together to improve the lives of all of the students through teaching, not only academics but also how to live fulfilled independent lives to the greatest extent possible.”
Ms. Weekly is viewed by her colleagues as organized and detail oriented. She’s not afraid to ask questions and suggest changes, or work hard to accomplish those changes. When her busy schedule allows, Ms. Weekly’s favorite free time activities include visiting with friends and family, working on crafty or home improvement projects, reading and traveling.
