Our Welcome To Sanford Lee County Teacher of the Week is Nicole Angelone Urbas of Bragg Street Academy. Mrs. Urbas is a 6-12 grade social studies teacher and has been a part of the BSA family for the past three of her 14-year teaching career.
Mrs. Urbas is an avid learner who attended not one, but four universities, including Peace College, Campbell University, University of North Carolina Wilmington and North Carolina State University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and education, and is currently working on her master’s in education and National Boards Certification.
In addition to teaching, Mrs. Urbas is also a School Improvement Team member, Middle School PLC Leader, Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports team member and an AVID team member at BSA. Mrs. Urbas believes that every student can achieve academic success through establishing learning foundations that clearly communicate the expectations and responsibilities for both students and teachers. She notes, “The goal of mastery learning is achieved when learners and teachers implement best practices to accomplish their expectations and responsibilities.”
The teaching accomplishment Mrs. Urbas is proudest of doesn’t involve receiving an award or furthering her education. Instead, it is her students’ achievements. “As an educator I am most proud of the accomplishments that my students have made amidst both academic and personal obstacles. To walk with them through these trials and see firsthand the hard work, dedication and perseverance to rise up and achieve their goals is great to experience.”
